  1. 1864-1916. Irish nationalist. While in the
  2. British consular service, he exposed the
  3. ruthless exploitation of the people of the
  4. Belgian Congo and Peru, for which he was
  5. knighted in 1911 (degraded 1916). He was
  6. hanged for treason by the British for his
  7. part in the Irish republican Easter Rising.
  8. In 1914 Casement went to Germany and
  9. attempted to induce Irish prisoners of war to
  10. form an Irish brigade to take part in a
  11. republican insurrection. He returned to
  12. Ireland in a submarine in 1916 (actually to
  13. postpone, not start, the Easter Rising), was
  14. arrested, tried for treason, and hanged.
